Cheshire East Council Prepares for Cyber Attack With ‘Wargame’

According to councillors, Cheshire East Council should prepare for cyber-attacks by playing out scenarios.

Why has Cheshire East Council acted this way?

This is a result of the CrowdStrike attack by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) last month.

What have the councillors at Chester East Council said?

In a comment to the BBC, Cllr Andrew Kolker of Chesire East Council said that an attack on the council would be “catastrophic” and it would be “nigh on impossible” to run the council without computers or telephones.

Cllr Kolker expects councils “could also be expected to step in if there was an attack on banking systems, for example, and people were unable to buy food or fuel,” the BBC reports.

Josie Griffiths, Head of Audit and Risk Management at the Council, said: “We have taken part in broader, emergency planning-led scenarios along a very similar line.

“And yes, it is very difficult to be able to manage and deliver the full program of services which this organisation delivers, and we really need to be able to understand, criticality, proportionality, accessibility.”

Committee member Ron Jones said: “There is, I believe, a back-up policy in place for computer failure, so we do have a foundation on which we can work should that happen.”
